Wellbeing Tips - Calcium

The development of strong bones and teeth is just one of the many key functions of calcium. This nutrient also plays a role in nerve transmission, helps regulate heartbeat and promote blood coagulation. Maintain optimum calcium levels by consuming the following calcium-rich foods:

-Milk  -Cheese

-Yogurt  -Soy and soy products

-Sardines  -Small fish with bones

-Green leafy vegetables

Rich calcium sources generally come from milk and its products. A glass of Magnolia Purefresh Natural Cow’s Milk has 300 mg which can meet 40% of an adult’s daily calcium needs while Magnolia Chocolait contains 214 mg which is about 30% to 40% of the daily needs of children. The daily requirements for calcium are:

•Adults  750 mg •Children  550 to 700 mg

Magnolia cheese, milk and ice cream are sources of calcium. Obtain your daily calcium from these sources:

•1/2 cup Vanilla Ice Cream  75 mg •2 Tbsp Cheezee Spread  105 mg •2 slices Cheddar Cheese  150 mg •1 cup Purefresh Natural  300 mg •1 cup Purefresh Low Fat  375 mg •1 cup Chocolait  214 mg

Calcium should be given priority in our diet. Neglecting to obtain enough calcium throughout early and middle life can lead to extensive degeneration of the bones in old age. To complete at least 50% of your daily calcium requirement, you may:

•Drink 1 glass of Magnolia Purefresh Low Fat Milk or •Have 2-1/2 servings of Magnolia Cheddar Cheese

Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption. There is variety of SMPFC products which are fortified with both nutrients. Have at least 1 to 2 servings of these products to get the maximum amount of calcium you need everyday.

Think of your bones as a bank, a calcium bank that is. Before your 30s, there is more calcium being “deposited” than “withdrawn” from your bones, thus it is important to bank as much of the nutrient as you can. In order to maintain proper bone health even after your “calcium banking” stage:

•Drink at least 1 glass of Magnolia Purefresh Low Fat milk, and •Consume at least 2 slices of Magnolia Cheese products daily
