Selenium, the Antioxidant

Selenium is a  mineral known to be an effective antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E. Antioxidant can eliminate free radicals and may help prevent the damage they cause.

Selenium for Thyroid Function

Selenium also helps maintain healthy function of the thyroid, the organ primarily responsible for the body’s metabolism. It plays a role in regulating thyroid hormone production.

Selenium for Immunity

Selenium along with other minerals like zinc, may help build up white blood cells. This boosts the body’s ability to ward off illness and infection.

Selenium Food Sources

Plant sources like vegetables are the most common dietary sources of selenium. However, this depends how much selenium was in the soil where the plants grew. Other good sources are fish, shellfish, grains, garlic, Monterey Meats (red meats), Magnolia Chicken and Brown Eggs.

The daily needs for selenium are the following:

•Children – 20 mcg •Adults – 31 mcg
